Post Surgical Micronutrition
Each time you eat, think and move it is nutrition that makes it happen. Every aspect of your body is built with nutrition and the foods you eat. When you think of it that way, nutrition is pretty important and even more impressive. All weight loss interventions increase the risk for nutritional deficiencies. And, the longer you are out from surgery, the greater the risk for deficiency.
The funny thing about nutrition is that you don’t necessarily feel deficient or feel the beneficial effects of proper supplementation. A great example of this is osteoporosis. Most people don’t find out they have osteoporosis until they break a bone. Osteoporosis can occur despite normal blood levels of calcium or other nutrients. How does this occur? The problem lies in standard testing. Serum/blood nutritional tests are flawed and will not tell you the entire picture of what is going on. Your body tightly regulates the nutrients that circulate throughout the blood stream. When there is a deficiency in circulating nutrients your body will withdraw nutrients from your cells and tissues to maintain a normal serum level. However, your cells and tissues (intracellular) are where your nutrients are utilized. You can have absolutely have normal serum nutrient levels but have a functional deficiency at the cellular level. |
